Boston Marathon qualifying standards 2025/2026
The Boston Athletic Association (BAA) sets qualifying standards for each 5-year age group. To run Boston, you must first achieve the standard in a certified marathon. However, meeting the standard no longer guarantees entry — in recent years, the BAA has accepted only the fastest qualifiers, resulting in a cutoff 5+ minutes faster than the official standard.

Frequently asked questions
What is the BQ standard for 2025/2026?
Standards vary by age and gender. Men 18-34 need 3:00:00; women 18-34 need 3:30:00. Each 5-year age group adds time. Use the calculator above for your specific standard.
What is the Boston cutoff?
The BAA accepts the fastest qualifiers until slots fill. In 2024, runners needed to beat the standard by 5:29 (329 seconds). This changes yearly and has generally increased over time.
Is meeting the BQ standard enough to get in?
No. Simply meeting the standard only makes you eligible to apply. You also need to beat it by the cutoff amount, which was 5:29 in 2024. Plan to run well under your standard.
